Note: this new file will not fit on 2GB CF cards. We're lucky that these BMW maps have fitted in previous years, but the 2013 maps are a bit larger this year. Speed camera adds less than 1MB.

Note: Update to System V5 to use V5 maps

SYSTEM UPDATE PROCESS
1. Turn on car ignition and leave on during update
2. Insert System CD V5.0
3. Wait for Update to be found
4. Choose Yes
5. Wait for update to complete
6. When asked to Insert Navigation Software, insert V5 CF card

V5 CF OPTIONS
1. Write V5 2GB CF IMAGE to CF card
(for old, standard Becker maps)
OR
2. Create 4GB CF card with magic text, copy TRACK01.RAW onto it
(for new, current BMW maps)

CF WARNINGS
1. Windows: Use USB Image Tool (link below): Device Mode, Restore IMG file to CF card.
1. Mac OS X: Use Disk Utility: Restore IMG file to CF card.
2. CF card required needs to be Official SanDisk (I recommend Ultra II model).
3. Therefore: Other brand CF cards will NOT work.
4. CF card required needs to be at least size 2,048,901,120 bytes
(this is important! it is 2.05GB using base-10 measure, 2GB using base-2 measure)
5. Thefore: Fake SanDisk CF cards will NOT work.

1. WRITING 2GB CF IMAGE TO CF CARD
Simplest is to use the CF card that was working for you with V4.
Make backup of CF V4 card using USB Image Tool in Device Mode, or Disk Utility on Mac.

2. CREATING YOUR OWN LARGER (4GB, 8GB) CF CARD
You will need:
1. Gparted (Linux/Ubuntu Live CD)
2. WinHex (Windows)
3. Official SanDisk CF card (use a trustworthy seller, retail packaging, to check if the card is legitimate you need to use a PCMCIA adapter and WinHex to see manufacturer name). Easier way is to just buy a trusted one - avoid cheap eBay deals "too good to be true".

In Gparted, operate on CF card:
1. Delete partitions of partitions (not format)
2. Create new partition on CF card, sized to fill almost all the card but leave smallest unit free (minimum 1KB, usually 1MB)
3. Apply changes

In WinHex:
1. locate unpartitioned space after main partition, put magic text there (see below)
2. save changes

MAGIC TEXT:
Becker branded devices: HARMANBECKER BECKER V5
Other (eg. Ferrari) branded devices: HARMANBECKER OEM V5
change V5 to V4 for older system version

I am now using V5.0 running on a 4GB card. Working well.

Hi emsef,

its long time ago, that i send a message to you, now i will begin.

The last Version of Becker V4.0 on my 3.62 CF card runs without failoures, but if i took all new files on a 4gb card mith many music (120 songs in mp3), i have the problem, that the navi software runs slowlier.
It tooks many minutes from start to get them to work. The next problem: Speedtraps runs a little while (30 - 45 minutes and crashed for ever)

I deleted many songs from 4gb cf and all runs ok.

Is this the same problem with Software 5.0 - and where can i find this for testing?

Hi,

Becker devices are not optimised for serious mp3 usage. Large numbers of mp3 files will slow down operation. You need good, high speed, Sandisk CF card for best results.

So, I recommend one folder MUSIC in the root level and then one folder per album inside of that. So, structure looks like this:

CF
-TRACK01.raw
-MUSIC
--ALBUM ONE
---MP3 A
---MP3 B
--ALBUM TWO
---MP3 C
---MP3 D
etc

With this setup you can achieve good results. There is still slight delay but only.

Also, it is useful to sort the directories and mp3s using:

This may speed things up, also.

V5 is much the same as V4 software, from what i can see. But of course with newer maps.

I have asked moderators where is best place for me to upload V5.0, but no reply. V5 seems the same in terms of MP3s.

If anybody has any hints, let me know.

thank you for the better strukture with mp3s on a cf card.

What i know is the possibilty to read the original v5 cf card with the “USB Image Tool 1.55” in the device mode. - sorry, i dont know if this works.

You can use V4 and V5 with bigger CF cards, but they need to be prepared in a special way. Easy to buy from eBay

I Use a 4GB today but the preparation reduced the card to 2GB.
