Has it even occurred to you the unit might be defective also in view of the problems from the onset?
Don'tfoll around with the unit which should have come with an original CD in the first place

Ok folks, I'm new on here but browsing using mobile phone so might have missed the correct location to put my question. I so apologies in advance.
My girlfriend 's dad has a VW Touran with rns 310 navigation system installed.
When he got the car there was a problem with the nav but he didn't get a disc with the car.
But when he went back with the car to the dealer they just supplied him with an sd card which also didn't work. I decided to copy the data on the supplied sd to another and results were a bit more positive, but the system would hang.
Then from here I found that you need to install any data to the sd by disc via the system, so I went on a hunt for a new version of the maps...
From here I've grabbed the v3 maps for UK, which have installed ok, and now no system hangs, but we still can't get any voice announcements to sound to tell us when to make any turns..
I've gone through the manual with a fine tooth comb and can't see what might be the answer. Radio works ok, so audio is fed to the speakers. But no navigation
Instructions are heard. I couldn't even tell you what sex the voice of the satnav has lol. We've never heard it.
The volume settings appear to be set ok. None of the settings is at zero so we should hear something.
Has anyone had this problem before?
Is there anyway of doing a complete firmware reset, or an update for it? Could it be that there isn't any voice audio on the SD Card?
I've been trying to fix this for ages, and given that the unit appears to be really simple to use, and that I'm quite technically minded, it's really frustrating that I can't fix this.
Any help greatfully recieved.

Of course it has occurred to me that the unit could well be faulty.
The problem is, that the car was purchased 2nd hand, and as far as I know the sat nav unit isn't covered by the remaining warranty.
(Of course this could be incorrect - I don't know the detail, but I have asked my girlfriend this question and she said it wasn't as she checked. Of course she could be wrong, as none of us are completely familiar with VW warranties. AFAIK the car is a 2010 plate, possibly 2009. There is the other aspect, which is that the dealer might well have been feeding her a story, and it is indeed covered.)
The thing is however, that in the main, the unit appears to work. Certainly, doing a proper install of the V3 maps has sorted the sat nav bugs out, other than the lack of Voice directions.
The touchscreen works fine, the radio works ok, and though I haven't tried it yet, I'd put money on it that basic audio playback via CD will work as well.
It seems fine.
Which makes me think that maybe some aspect of the firmware might be corrupted.
Or, and this is the main reason I came onto this site, that there is an easily fixable quirk of the system, that someone with indepth knowledge, would know the answer to fix.
The whole point of me being on here is to save him from coughing up a very large sum for a repair.
I mean, the dealer's solution to the problem was to buy a disc, at £120.
That suggests to me that their knowledge isn't exactly great either.
And going by the results of my installation of the V3 disc, this wouldn't have solved the problem anyway, assuming that the V3 disc on here, is a bit by bit copy of an original disc supplied by VW.
However, if I know how the system works (ie is audio installed as part of the CD install, or is this information part of the firmware) it should be easy enough to fix.
I mean, if the system is completely screwed trying to fix it by a failed firmware upgrade by me,it's likely he'd need to take it back to a dealer for a costly repair anyway so what is there to lose? I mean, these systems are generally rudimentary anyway, aren't they?
What sort of things are the repair shop likely to do that I wouldn't?

The unit is faulty and there is nothing you can do about it
It falls under the full gurantee by VAG
There are no FW updates for any RNS310
A specialized repair shop would have the diagrams and most important a testing rig where the unit can be programmed and memory flashed

I've been trying![]()
Hello, you could try to change the language of the RNS310 to a different language and see if the navi speaks.
Maybe this will reset the language memory and load voice data from scratch.
Let's know if this works...
Hi i am a newbie in the RNS 310 world. Have just bought a used 310 sw 227 - a little old unit from 11/9 I have found out. Problem is that the unit works fine in the new Beetle mj 2012 with radio and Navi info in the mfa+ but I have also connected a telephone module 5k9 035 730d, which works fine in the can gw but can't be seen by the RNS or in the mfa+. Have Read somewhere that the 1 Gen of 310 doesent support Bt phonemodule?
Anyone any ideas?
Regards from Denmark
