I downloaded the BMW Business Maps 2012 Europe (thanks to the community here for making this possible!)
Disc 1 is a Double Layered DVD. My laptop is somewhat old and my DVD writer is not capable of reading / writing double layered discs. So it got me thinking...is there a way to isolate data for selected countries only thereby reducing the overall image size to make it fit on a SL DVD
Would anyone be interested in collaborating with me to progress this idea further?
Note: The idea of this post is to explore a concept. Please only reply if you can add value to the discussion or want to share your past experience in case you have already tried this - no comments / advice about me buying a newer DVD writer (since that is not the point of this thread).
well I am not particularly familiar with the content of this dvd but usually the idea is to get rid of unnecessary files and folders like TPD folder and all but the preferred language specific files. this can mean hundreds of megabytes which might be good enough for the success.
Here's an update since my first post. To be honest this has been on my mind since a few weeks when I first obtained the map image. Progress has been really slow and disappointing, to start with, since there is absolute minimal information on the internet with regards to file formats. However, it is amazing what one can achieve with simple tools like hex editors, database editors etc and a LOT of digging around on the internet, fishing for whatever little information there is out there.
I am glad to say that I have made sufficient progress with regards to my aim of being able to shrink the size of the image to a single layered DVD. This has been achieved by retaining only the UK data files and getting rid of all other countries. At the very top level, the business map DVD has three types of map data files - so far I have only managed to decrypt one type. Hence, I say "sufficient" progress and not "complete" progress. However, it has allowed me to reduce the ISO image size from 5.09GB to 1.93GB.
File KN104EUX08.DB2_XAC reduced from 1.8GB to 208MB
File KNT104EUX07.DB reduced from 930MB to 205MB
I replaced the original files with the new ones. Burned this 1.93GB image to a DVD and tried it in the car just before I started typing this update. There was a momentary scare since the iDrive screen went completely black for about 5-10 sec. I thought I had killed it but then the BMW image flashed on the screen followed by the home screen. I launched Navigation and guess what....it works!! Tried different zoom levels, inputting addresses, traffic information, navigate to saved addresses and all seem to work.
Moving forward my next goal is to further decrypt each of the country data files into small chunks. Surely at the very last layer, the information has got to be common to other mapping softwares out in the market (after all Navteq and TeleAtlas are the two key sources of information, the difference is the way the softwares are packaged). If I can achieve this then the possibilities are endless - custom poi, custom updates, adding non-supported countries etc.
My other aim is to download the Professional maps to check if the same file formats are used. If yes then I want to check if I can integrate the decrypted data from the professional maps into the business maps. I doubt that the 7-digit post code search will work since that functionality seems to be built in within the software that it loaded on to the nav unit but let's see.
Let me know if you want to try the UK only image that I have created so far and I will upload it some place. I only need to upload the two files that I have altered, the rest are the same from the original DVD. If you want any other country (or a selection of countries) to be isolated, again let me know.
Once again, if there is anyone who is knowledgeable about this sort of stuff then pm me. The more eyes and hands, the better!!
