Newbie with Chinese Double Din - GPS not working

    Hi Guys,

I purchased a chinese double Din device from someone and the GPS is not connecting to satellites at all.

I already know that it runs WinCE 5.0, i tried to use the wince info tool but it ways no GPS detected.
I also installed iGo 8, and tried com port 1 and 2 with baud 4800 and 9600...

I was wondering if there was a devide manager in WinCE 5.0 or where i could find drivers or anything that i can see that the GPS is actually functional.

The device i have is this one : http://www.ebay.ca/itm/170723058964?...84.m1423.l2649

    Any help would be appreciated!

    Regards,

It is not uncommon that if you purchase this kind of Chinese junk, you have a box full of crap

The best advice seems to send it bakc and request refund
Navigation out of the box should function properly from the start, not after endless consulting and testing

iGo8 itself has gps autodetect in its menu to scan all ports, have you tried that?

You might want to factory reset the gps module using sirftech.

    Thanks for that tool,

I tried it. when i scan it does not seem to find anything. Com 2 says GPS Port, but when i try to scan for baud it does nothing.

If i try to open the port is says cannot open %s

Then i found factory reset under nmea, but still no dice its like if i was clicking but it was doing nothing..

    Any other ideas?

    Thanks!

Re: Newbie with Chinese Double Din - GPS not working

I'll say we've made a little progress here. GPS port, com 2, has been detected on your device by sirftech. The signal however is not getting thru. That's why you can't get a baud rate lock on.

Unlike handheld gps, external antenna is absolutely essential for dash mount devices. Have you tried moving the antenna to different locations in the car?

It has been reported on some forums that the windscreen of certain modern cars greatly degrades gps signal. A recent installation I came across, came with gps antenna, with over 15 feet of cabling to be able to reach any corner of the car.

You might also want to check that the antenna is properly screwed in at the back and that there's no broken wiring.

My personal preference would be anywhere inside the car where the signal strength is strongest, unobtrusive, away from curious kids (I do not have those specially treated, radiation reducing windscreen).

Configure igo8 to com port 2, switch to the gps status screen, move the antenna about in the car to locate the highest signal strength and maximum number of satellites.

Googling "car gps antenna installation" yeild a myriad of ideas.
