    NAVIGON, a Garmin company

As we all know, Garmin bought Navigon some time ago.

Are both, Garmin and Navigon using the same maps ? I know Garmin uses maps from NAVTEQ, but I don't know if Navigon is also using Navteq's maps.

Navigon has navigation software for Android. Garmin has not. I've been using Garmin on Symbian in the last 3-4 years but I plan to move to an Andoid phone.. I'm very happy with Garmin maps and never tried Navigon maps. But now, if Garmin and Navigon is one company, I think the maps should be the same (especially if both are from Navteq).

My question : is navigon as much detailed as Garmin is ? I'm interesting for Europe map only.

    Thanks

There is no manufacturer that uses Navteq Maps since Navteq is not making them. They supply data from which others can make their maps just as they want them. The difference between the consumers of these data is the extent of the available attributes that are part of the purchase and also largely defining the price of the data apart from the "age" of the data.

Anything Garmin will be using from Navigon must be a tremendous step forward since the Garmin navigation software is completely hopeless for use in an automobile. They are still basing the algorithms used for navigation, on the US situation. This means the routing on an European street network is hopeless and more often than not users are routed trough residential areas rather than a parallel road for through traffic.
On many a forum the disadvantages of Garmin and even the dangers in using it are widely discussed. The problem is that also Kenwood is using the same crap software and equally disappoints its customers.

I live in the US and travel in the US. I have tried Garmin, Tom Tom, Navigon, iGO, Sygic, Rte 66. And although you say Garmin's algorithm is bad I find it more favorable than the others. With its use of avoidances and choice of quickest and shortest routes it does a wonderful job. If set up properly you can avoid highways or set it to avoid residential roads. Sometimes simpler is better. I also have the Kenwood DNX-9960. And the reason I purchased it was because of the included Garmin software.

In the past it has been stated that TeleAtlas has better maps in Europe than Navteq and the reverse is true in the United States. I don't know if that stands true today. Nokia has aquired Navteq in recent years and many claim they are just not doing Navteq justice. But to say Garmin is not using Navteq maps is basically untrue. They are using Navteq maps or info which is basically a Navteq based map. Navigon also uses Navteq. So do many others like Magellan. Companies like Sygic and IGO use both. I believe Tom Tom only uses TeleAtlas now. Actually they may own TeleAlas now.

I apologize to the original poster as this does not actually answer your question. If size means anything, check out the size of each providers maps. That may help. If not hopefully someone who has dedicated time of testing both will respond.

This is not an answer to which map supplier is source of Garmin and Navigon maps but just a comment on my experience with these applications. In March, I took my Garmin 1490 with most recent Europe map and an Ipad (jail broken) running Navigon to navigate in Portugal. I ended up using Navigon as the roads were more up to date (and easier to use, partly due to a larger display on an Ipad).

I also compared using my Garmin VS Sygic running on my ASUS Eee transformer in Washington state. Again, Sygic maps were more up-to-date than Garmin (eg. it showed some newly constructed round-a-bouts in Blaine, WA while Garmin maps did not.

I conclude that Garmin uses maps that are not as current as Navigon and Sygic ....Garmin is more convenient size to use in a car but tablet GPS software outperforms Garmin.

LOL seriously? I dunno if things have changed this much. Last time I tested almost all nav apps(no data connection required) on windows mobile and Garmin was the only one acceptable... I switched to android and Google Maps is pretty good as long as I have cellphone coverage... I just don't get why Garmin dropped their line of software(Garmin Mobile XT, Garmin Mobile XT PC). Navigon/Sygic on android are no where close to Garmin Mobile XT

Navigon maps are very detailed for WE, for EE - not, Garmin and Navigon aren't same companies, Navigon is company from Germany, Garmin operate on all continents, with hq in USA, and offer products in many different areas, like road maps, sea maps, air maps, etc. They are totally different gps map and software providers...
