A question.... llooking for an answer.
After updating internal maps (gmapprom.img) on some units you still get these occasional messages that your maps are more than a year old and visit Garmin... etc for update.
Does anyone know what triggers this message or how to prevent this nag message from recurring?
Thanks!

There is some bit in IMG file which makes a Garmin device save the current date and the map FID in NV memory when it first sees the map. In one year this record will make the device show the message (only when the map is loaded) with period ~1 month until a never map version is installed in some special way (I don't understand it yet).
So you can do the following:
1) Clear the record (install date, FID) from NV memory using a special USB command. I can help you with that, but the problem will appear the next year, as you are still using the map with that bloody bit.
2) Clear the special bit in IMG file. I can't do it now.
3) Clear the entire NV memory. You can do it yourself but you will loose many devices settings and the device version (765 will show 7xx at startup).
The prompt was caused by internal software versions.
Frequently most people update their maps but not the device software.
Conflict on date issues. Does not cause any navigational problems.
This utility should help: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/32785663/mupd-clr.rar
Use it as follows:
1) Fully boot your device.
2) Press the battery icon until an engineering menu appears
3) Connect the device to PC
4) run start.bat by double clicking it
In case of success the utility will print a text similar to the following:
And if you are lucky the pesky message won't appear sooner than one year from today.Code:M:\WORK\GARMIN\[UTILS]\mupd-clr\Release>mupd-clr.exe map update message remover v0.1 by kunix Initializing USB... hwid = 596 swvr = 490 name = n№vi 670 Software Version 4.90 Initializing USB once again... removing the map update message... all done M:\WORK\GARMIN\[UTILS]\mupd-clr\Release>pause Press any key to continue . . .
Worth a try.
