New map locking and old units.

I know this is academic as we are lucky enough to be able to download unlocked maps but I am curious about a few things.
Is there any disadvantage to using an unlocked map? if there isn't why do people request locked versions?
I ask this as I have recently updated maps on different units and found that new maps which are unlocked either in mapsource or have .unl file generated by jetmouse will not work on a new unit like an Edge 800 yet run perfectly OK on a Nuvi 1490. In both cases the maps were added to a micro SD card using the unique number found by Nuvi hidden menu, and/or a PDA running XT.
There must be changes in both the map and unit software to make this happen? What is best practice now for unlocking?

    Help| Converting IMG Maps

    Hello,
I have Garmin TOPO maps (img file) and i want to convert those maps to other maps that i could insert in my android phone such as oziexplorer, oruxmaps or any other software..

Ive searched over the internet for few hours without any success.
This is the only guide i found (How to Convert a Garmin IMG to OZF2 | eHow.com) and it didnt worked for me.

Can someone please help me convert those maps to any other type of map..?
    Please..?

    Add data to a geocache

How can I add dat to a geocache downloaded from geocaching.com. Only premium members can download the gpx file but I want to add the data myself. Is this possible?

This is a pretty sad sight, seeing lots of good questions but few of them being answered. Maybe someone has any ideas on how to make forum members more active in the general discussion threads?

does it mean I didn't unlock the map successfully? I unlocked it according to the sticky thread.

I have the same problem with City Navigator Australia New Zealand 2012 on Garmim Mobile XT on Nokia E71. When I select search by address, the message "detailed map required" is shown. However when I go to "View Map" it is shown as a detailed map. Does anyone know the reason why it is not possible to search by address?

Re: can't use Topo Au and NZ V3

I have an old 2011.1 map in mapsource that in the map product manager it says "not lockable". I can't find the files anywhere, but it comes up when I run mapsource. It doesn't show in "add and remove" files section. How can I remove this from mapsource?

    @bowser

If you look in "Map Product Manager" -> "Map Product Information" tab selected and the 4th column "Installed Location" - What do you see?

Windows Vista & Windows 7: Garmin GMAP maps are by default stored at "%PROGRAMDATA%\Garmin\Maps" (C:\ProgramData\Garmin\Maps) for Administrator installs and "%APPDATA%\Garmin\Maps" (C:\Users\{USERNAME}\AppData\Roaming\Garmin\Maps) if installed as normal user.

Garmin MapSource maps in older format with IMG-tiles are normally stored at "C:\Garmin".

Did you use the Map Merge for OziExplorer Utility once they are converted you have to merge them into ozi explorer to work. have a try under
    OziExplorer - Optional Extras

Thanks Ballebar. I don't know why I never though to look at the full line to see the location. Learn something everyday. Thanks again.

    Re: POI Truck Stops/Fueling Stations

I just downloaded City Navigator 2012.40 IMG file to my Garmin 260W. Now it doesn't show any POIs. Any ideas? The IMG files are already unlocked right? Thanks
