Looking to buy a Garmin GPS.. need advice/help

I am looking to upgrade from my tomtom one V3 gps that I have had since probably 07. Never had any trouble out of it, until i bought a traffic subscription a few days ago never got it called tomtom told me it was not available anymore and got a refund lol. Anyway, Im looking to upgrade to a Garmin GPS preferably with lifetime traffic and maps but not required. The one things that's throwing me for a loop is the "Elevation" display, which is a huge selling point for me. I had seen this one woman's GPS in her car, which i was working on, and it was showing the elevation on her map off to the right of the screen in a white box, not just in the menu at the top(I didnt catch the model number but I think it was a Nuvi). I would love to get a GPS that would show the elevation on the map (off to the side somewhere or on the bottom) AND still look at my active route planned route (and have the lifetime maps and traffic, but as I said not required). I have been searching for days now trying to find info on the elevation question I had but no luck whatsoever. Can anyone give me a gps/list of gps' that offer the required elevation features displayed alongside the active route? Or is this option possible on all Garmins'?

    Thanks for your time!
    Chris

    Hello,
think twice before you change your TomTom for a garmin. the bes maps are from Teleatlas on the TomTom devices. I have both with the laatest maps. navtec maps contain for many year the same faults. you can change streetdirectons on your own with TomTom. Not one map is perfect, but navigating on roads with a car than you beter use TomTom.

Yes I'd agree too, Garmin doesn't hold a candle to Tom Tom (or Primo in my case) when navigating "on road" BUT Garmin will let me load very good "off the shelf" Topo maps to go "off road" with. Neither TT or Primo can do that. Further Garmin has all the PC software to plan routes, tracks off road etc etc - SO its a matter of "horses for courses" I guess. I have both Primo & Garmin loaded on the same SD card for this very purpose.

I have a newer TomTom XL with the latest Navcore (9400) and latest map map offered by TomTom using their 30 latest map guarantee (North America 2 GB 885-4097). I tried to Navigate from Baltimore (inner city) to Crazy Rays Junkyard at 2801 Hawkins Point Rd, Baltimore, MD 21226. A ver simple and straight forward route. All you need to do is stay on 695 south, exit at exit 1, make a right and continue for another 2 or 3 miles and you are there. Needless to say, my XL with lates map dumped me 3 to 4 miles away on the opposite side after exiting 695 and being i'm new in this area i got lost for an hour! It never brought me to my destination.

Angry, i went and bought a Garmin Nuvi 265 but it had such a serious flaw i returned it and went back to my TomTom. You see the Nuvi 265 won't allow me preview my routes before beginning my journey. With TomTom you can always preview your routes so you have a general idea of the routes and sometimes you may know better routes and avoid some of those proposed by the GPS. With the Garmin Nuvi 265 i could only type in my destination and drive blindly, no way to preview the route. To me it's really amazing that something as simple as this cannot be implemented. No extra hardware is needed, just good programming.

I'll never by any GPS that doesn't allow me preview the routes before beginning the journey. My computer skills are very poor and i'll need to preview the routes on the GPS itself. If anyone knows any Garmin GPS that allows me preview the route please let me know.

    Dude!

YOU cleary don't know what you are talking about and apparently care to learn so Enyoy your Tom-Tom.

Any Nuvi will allow you to preview and alter your route. Newer models will even calculate 2 initial routes and allow you to choose between them as a starting point.

You can preview the route on the map.
You can look at the turn by turn directions.
You can edit/modify any route by adding via points force it along a particular path.

Tiger, thank you for your reply. I clearly could not preview my routes with Nuvi 265, nor with my sister's Nuvi 205W ( maybe it's 255W, can't remember). I'm very willing to learn, that's why i'm on this forum. Are you saying that routes can be previewed on a Nuvi 265? I haven't tried any of the newer models yet because i can't afford them; i usually buy cheaper older models from Ebay. A friend also has another Nuvi i can't remember the Model but both he and i couldn't preview routes. Unfortunately i don't have any Nuvi on me now to try again but please enlighten me because i would really love to own a Nuvi. Remember i don't have any shares in TomTom and am only looking for what is good for me. Mr room mate has gone to work but will be back in the evening. He has a Nuvi, i can't remember the Model; just give me instructions, i'll try it when he's back. Thanks

Is easy to prewiew the route,

    1) If you are at home select Tools/Settings/System/GPS simulator select ON(or wait 10 sec and the device will propose it in automatic if no satelite fix)
2)Select Where to? and write the address and then select GO
    3) The device will assk you if you want to simulate this route/yes
    4) The simulation will begin
    5) If you touch the screen when you see directions or roads name will have trip infos and even JCV images(in supported devices)

    Give a try.....

You can either look at it in simulatuion mode or in real time. In either case, you do the go to and then go back to the main svreen as if you are going to drive.

Hit the green bar at the top ov the screen and you will be taken to the turn-by-turn screen. On the bottom center is the "show mnap" button where you can preview it on the map.

You can also examine each of the turns by touching the directions screen.

Not all of the low end models 2xx will allow you edit/modify and save the route. If you see an edit button, you can add vias. I think the 255 and 265 can do this but I don't know for certain. A 200 can't and I don't know about a 205.
