Purpose of this this tab is to gather all input files. Following operation are possible:

    * Add files - invokes dialog "Input files". After loading files, the tab will display list of file names. You can select files from list using mouse or keyboard.
    * Add directories - invokes dialog "Input directories". GMapTool will load all files from directories with extentions img, typ, trf, unl, gmp, mdr, srt, tre, rgn, lbl, net, nod, dem.
    * Square icon - selected all files.
    * Arrow icon - move selected files up or down.
    * X icon - removes selected files from the list.
    * Info - initiates reading of selected files. Information about the contents of files will appear under the "Log" tab.
    * Details - initiates reading of selected files. Detailed information about the contents of files will appear under the "Log" tab.

"Input files" dialog allows to choose one or more input files. You can also enter file name with a keyboard.

The dropdown list "Favorites" allows you to remember a few selected folders and quick access to those folders. The choice of disk drive can be done by pointing to the folder "My Computer".

    "Options" Tab

The "Option" tab allows to definie the appearance and behavior of the program. Options are as follows:

    * Appearance - determines appearance of graphic elements of the programme. Option "System" sets the appearance consistent with the characteristics of the operating system.
    * Color - allows the choice of color for graphical user interface. The "System" sets the calor in accordance with the operating system settings.
    * Language - allows the choice of language. The "System" sets the language in accordance with the operating system settings.
    * Verbose output - determines what messages will be displayed under "Log" tab.
    * Advanced options - enables advanced input parameters for "join", "split" and "write" actions. In most operation advanced parameters are not needed.
    * Experimental options - enables experimental program features. Files created using experimental options may not be compatible with the format recognized by the GPS receivers. Do not load these files into internal GPS memory. Use flash card for experiments, in case of locking GPS, you can simply remove card.
    * cGPSmapper | MapTK - you can insert here full path to map compiler. You can choose cGPSmapper or MapTK. Path is not necessery when compiler is on system path.
    * Save translation - advanced option, allows to write into a file all text strings used by program.
    * Select color - option allows free user choise of color for graphical interface.

    "Join" Tab

Tab is used to enter all parameters for "join" action. Action "join" uses all files from "files" tab, regardless of whether they are selected or not.

You should provide output file name. This can be done using a key "file" or typing a name in line beside the key. Other parameters are optional.

    * File - specifies the output file name. Into this file will be joined all the maps placed under "Files" tab.
    * Mapset - specifies the name of the entire mapset. By default, the program uses name "GMapTool All".
    * Add new unlock code - allows to enter one unlock code consisting of 25 characters. Dash are ignored.
    * Set mapset FID - FID and PID values for generation of record F in MPS subfile. You should provide this values when merging individual maps. For mapset created by Mapsource, the parameter is redundant, the F records already have been
    generated by Mapsource.
    * Remove unlock codes - unlock codes from input files are ignored. The parameter doesn't suppres entry of a new code from the box above.
    * Create demo map - advanced option, the output file will have the demo map marker. This map does not require unlock code but your GPS will work in demo mode. Do not load demo maps into GPS internal memory, in some cases, the removal of such maps could be impossible.
    * Remove autorouting data NOD - advanced option, autoroutingu data (subfiles NOD) will be ignored. This option can be used to create maps for older models of GPS. Option doesn't work for NT maps.
    * Remove altitude data DEM - advanced option, altitude data (subfiles DEM) will be ignored. Option doesn't work for NT maps.
    * Don't create MPS subfile - advanced option, directory data MPS won't be written into output file.
    * Include subfiles and other data - advanced option, all input files will be written into output file.
    * Short header - advanced option, will create file with 1KiB header. Most programs uses 4KiB headers.
    * Version in header - advanced option, GMapTool will write map version into file header.
    * Convert to quasi-NT format - experimental option, GMapTool will join map subfiles into GMP subfile. GMapTool doesn't compress nor change content of the map.
    * Set block size - experimental option, define the size of the write block. Accepted values are 1, 2, 4, 8 ... etc. Without this option GMapTool automatically calculates the optimum value.
    * Join all - initiates the action on all files in accordance with the specified parameters.
    * Join selected - initiates the action on files selected in "Files" tab, in accordance with the specified parameters.
    * Info - initiates reading of files selected for "write". Information about the contents of files will appear under the "Log" tab.
    * Clear - clear all entered parameters.

    The "Split" Tab

Tab serves to provide the parameters for "split" action. It is necessary to provide the folder in which the maps will be saved. Other parameters are optional. "Split" action applies to all files placed on the "Files" tab, regardless of whether they were selected or not.

Action has five modes of operation. In basic mode, GMapTool saves all the maps and data contained in input files. Files can be used to create another mapset or for editing.

In mapset mode GMaptool tries to split big file into map products according to FID number. FID numbers are taken from F records from MPS subfile.

In subfiles mode GMapTool writes all subfiles from all input maps.

In empty maps mode GMapTool creates source files for empty map with the same area as input maps. This source can be used as a template to develop own maps.

In Mapsource mode GMapTool generates additional files needed to bind mapset to Mapsource. These files are mapset.tdb and empty preview map mapset.mp. In addition mapset.mdx and *. mdr files are created. Unfortunately GMapTool is unable to convert a MDR file form mapset into a format acceptable to Mapsource. Do not bind this files to Mapsource, it will not work properly.

You should compile mapset.mp into mapset.img. Use cGPSmapper for compilation. Then make appropriate entries in the Windows registry. You can make this with MapSetToolKit, use "Install a existing mapset" button.

The options available on the screen are as follows:

    * Directory - directory for output files. The directory can be selected by opening a "Directory" dialog with "directory" or typede into the line located next to the button.
    * Create - define split mode. GMapTool can split file into subfiles, single maps, or split itno maps and create additional files for Mapsource.
    * Compile preview map - GMapTool will run automaticly cGPSmapper or MapTK to compile preview map. Compiler can be on system path or you can provide full path to compiler in "Options" tab.
    * Short headers - advanced option, will create files with 1KiB header. Some programs expect short heades.
    * Mapset - mapset name. This name will appear in the maps list shown by Mapsource.
    * Set mapset FID - select the value of FID and PID for TDB file. If the value is different than the actual data contained in the maps, there may be problems with unlocking coded maps. The FID and PID should be given when input files consist of multiple map products.
    * Limit preview map - advanced option, restricts the scope of the preview map to values giwen in S-N-W-E fields. If option "Limit mapset area" is active, preview map will be smaller then ±178.5° longitude and ±89.5° latitude. This parameter was introduced in order to obtain correct compilation of preview map for world base maps.
    * Limit mapset area - advanced option, the mapset will contain only maps situated inside area limited by coordinates given in fields S-N-W-E.
Set CodePage - advanced option, allows setting of the CodePage in TDB file. If option is not specified, GMapTool will use value from maps.
    * Files name - advanced option, GMapTool will use this name for files for Mapsource, instad of name "mapset".
    * Add empty DEM - advanced option. GMapTool will add an empty DEM subfile for each map. Option could be used to mix into single mapset maps with DEM data and maps that doesn't contain DEM.
    * Create TDB v3 when possible - advanced option. GMapTool typically generates a TDB version 4, which is not sufficiently documented. The format version 3 is known much more precisely, but is not suitable for more advanced maps, with autorouting or DEM data.
    * Create TDB for marine map - advanced option, GMapTool will create TDB for marine map. Map will be visible in Mapsource and HomePort but not in BaseCamp
    * Create file list split.lst - advanced option, GMapTool will create text file with names of all created files. List can be used to recover original img.
    * Split all - initiates action on all files in accordance with the specified parameters.
    * Split selected - initiates action on files selected in "Files" tab, in accordance with the specified parameters.
    * Info - initiates reading of files selected for "write". Information about the contents of files will appear under the "Log" tab.
    * Clear - clear all entered parameters.

    "Write" Tab

Tab is used to provide data to be entered directly into the original maps. "Write" action will only work on files selected under the 'Files" tab. You can provide the following parameters:

    * Mapset - set new mapset name. This operatnion is not always possible, if fails use join action.
    * Set transparency - set the properties of maps.
    * Set draw priority - set the priority for drawing order. The receiver draws first maps with lower priority. Maps with a higher priority are drawn later and cover previously drawn. The value should be in the range of 0 to 31.
    * Insert unlock code - enter new unlock code. GMapTool tries to write code into a file, but the operation is not always possible. If it fails, use "join" action.
    * Only for FID - causes that all changes are made only for maps with the same FID and PID value. A value of 0 matches any maps.
    * DEMO flag - advanced option, allows to set or remove demo marker from img file.
    * Change map ID - advanced option, allows to change the map ID assigned by the author of maps. The operation was designed for maps compiled with cGPSmapper.
    * Correct TYP - advanced option, GMapTool writes new values of FID, PID and Code Page into TYP subfile. Leave empty input boxes for values, that shouldn't be changed.
    * Modify labels - advanced option, allows to modify labels. GMapTool can convert text to upper case, lower case or remove accents. GMapTool can deal with 8-bit characters only and with limited set of Code Pages. For NT maps some labels are placed in RGN subfile, GMapTool doesn't modify this labels.
    * Set version in header - advanced option, GMapTool writes map version into img file header.
    * Refresh header date - advanced option, GMapTool writes current date and time into img file header.
    * TRE parameters - experimental option, GMapTool writes 4 bytes into TRE header. You can find current values with "Files" -> "Details". For most Garmin maps parameters are 1, 4, 23, 13. CNE has 1, 3, 17, 13. Cgpsmapper also puts values 1, 3, 17, 9. Probably this parameters are connected with routing, for example control distance off route before recalculation. Third parameter is probalby used by nuvis to select priority of routable maps. Forth parametre contains transparency flag.
    * Write all - initiates action on all files in accordance with the specified parameters.
    * Write selected - initiates action on files selected in "Files" tab, in accordance with the specified parameters.
    * Info - initiates reading of files selected for "write". Information about the contents of files will appear under the "Log" tab.
    * Clear - clear all entered parameters.

    The "Log" Tab

Tab shows information generated by the program. In the following operations are available:

    * Search - allows you to search for a text. Search runs from the beginning of the buffer bookmarks.
    * Next - search the next appearance of text.
    * Clear - clears the entire contents of the buffer.
    * Stop - the button appears when execuitng an action. Pressing interrupt the operation.

    Re: Gmap Tool

don't see where to edit post.Where can I find what map is originally supposed to be on my garmin? Canadian version I would assume.I am trying to find it as it doesn't seem to be showing any roads on my unit after putting inland maps on card. it shows all the water fairly accurately though. I want to merge the inland lakes , the original file for unit and any other well detailed backroads and trails maps. Haven't found one anybody did on here.

    Thanx
