JaVaWa Device Manager helps you to manage the contents of your Garmin device and accompanying (micro) SD cards in an easy way. The program performs an exhaustive check, reports potential conflicts and provides a wealth of information about the maps in your device or on your SD card.
You can secure contents of your device (or SD card) through a backup, and restore it later.
JaVaWa Device Manager also offers the possibility to delete certain non-essential files to make room for the ever-expanding maps, you can install different types of files while JaVaWa Device Manager ensures that they are put in the right place, and you can customize certain properties of maps.
Finally it is possible to create a virtual copy of your device; this is practical if your map was delivered only on the device or on a SD card, or when the programs of Garmin don't allow you to install an update on your computer anymore. Why use JaVaWa Device Manager?
Garmin GPS devices support the use of more than one map; there is a large range of maps available, both paid and free.
But it isn't made easy for the user:
The available space on a device is limited.
Each unit has different requirements with regard to file names and folders in which the maps must be put in.
Some devices have a limit to the number of map segments.
Having (parts of) the same map twice on the device is a guaranty for problems.
Some devices require transferring several maps at once, but other devices require the opposite: one map at a time. Unfortunately the programs of Garmin do not take this into account.
It is very difficult to determine which (parts of) maps are exactly on your device.
The contents of most devices can be accessed easily via Explorer / Finder, but it's also too easy to "clean up" the contents (with possibly disastrous consequences...)

Which devices does it work with?
JaVaWa Device Manager can handle all modern Garmin devices that support the USB mass storage mode. This is indicated by the fact that after connecting the device to your computer one or two drive letter(s) will be assigned (Windows), or that one or two icons appear on the Desktop (Mac).
This includes the following devices:
Outdoor: eTrex 10/20/30, Dakota, Oregon, Colorado, GPSMAP 62/78 and Montana 1); there is limited support for older models like the GPSMAP 60 C(S)x and eTrex Legend/Vista (H)Cx 2)
Fitness: Edge 605/705 and Edge 800
Motorcycle: zumo (all models) 3)
Automotive: nüvi (all models) 3)
JaVaWa Device Manager does NOT work with devices that do not have a USB mass storage mode, for example older models like the Geko and the Street Pilots. This also applies to the recently introduced Monterra.
1) Note that with certain changes such as renaming or moving files on these devices, some or all maps that where deactivated will be activated automatically, sometimes even in every profile! (this varies by model)
Having multiple maps active will slow down the device and has adverse effects when using routes, so always check the settings on your device after making changes.
2) Some older devices such as the GPSMAP 60/76 and the eTrex Legend/Vista also have a USB mass storage mode, but with these devices it cannot be determined what type it is. Such a device (or rather the SD card in it) is treated like a SD card in a card reader: as a generic device where no checks are performed on what file types it supports, and no check whether a backup that you want restore to it, belongs to it.
This means that JaVaWa Device Manager enables you for example to put GPX files on the SD card, while the unit doesn't support that. When restoring a backup you should take extra care not to restore the wrong backup.
Most devices do connect in USB mass storage mode automatically.
A final point of attention: a locked map is always associated with the device ID, or in the case of a pre-installed map on an SD card with the ID of that SD card. JaVaWa Device Manager can retrieve the device ID from modern devices, but not from older devices as specified above. Also, the ID of an SD card cannot be retrieved.
In those cases JaVaWa Device Manager can determine that a map is locked, but not whether it is unlocked for the device or SD card. You will see a warning, but that doesn't mean that the map does not work; you can only check that on the device itself.
3) Some new nüvi's and the zumo 340/350 do not connect in USB mass storage mode out of the box, but these use the MTP protocol. This way JaVaWa Device Manager cannot manage the files on your device. Fortunately, these devices can be switched to the USB mass storage mode. For example, with the nüvi 2595 it works like this: go to the volume screen and press & hold the top right corner for several seconds; then you will get a configuration screen. In this screen go to "MTP Settings", select "Mass Storage" here and select "Save".
In the development of JaVaWa Device Manager there was much attention for the safe handling of the files on your device. The program has been tested with various devices, but Garmin has a very wide range of models...
Examining your device with JaVaWa Device Manager is safe, but operations that alter the contents of your device (installing, (re)moving, move, renaming or restoring files) can have adverse consequences. Please read the manual carefully, make a backup before you change anything, and if in doubt you should consult an expert.
