    install.gmap

    New version now includes mapsource worldmap

    install.gmap v11.03:
    multiupload.com/64JCTYCHNQ

    here is how it works:
    -it checks a few things
    -installs gmap folder (copy to %APPDATA% )
    -unlocks it
    -run mapsource with last installed map

    The difference:
    -all-in-one package, maybe not for experts, but EASY for others.
    -need only install.gmap and *.gmap folder to run (see Readme)
    -other tools may not allways work (names and path with blank spaces or '&')

    ReadMe
    :: install.gmap.exe

    install & unlock for original *.gmap

    tested on XP & W7

    ============

    EASY:

    run install.gmap.exe next to xxxx.gmap [NOT in xxxx.gmap folder]

    x:\[any path]\install.gmap.exe
    x:\[any path]\xxxx.gmap\*.*
    x:\[any path]\xxxx.gmap\*.*
    x:\[any path]\xxxx.gmap\*.*

    DONE!

    ============

    UN-INSTALL maps from install.gmap?

    just delete xxxx.gmap from Maps-folder

    ============

    TIPS:

    all-in-one package, maybe not for experts, but EASY for others.

    need only install.gmap and original xxxx.gmap folder to run [no need to get patched files]

    works also with limited guest account [office & public PC]

    does NOT change source files [keeps the original xxxx.gmap folder]

    installs only for 'current user' [DON'T need admin rights]

    installs original locked .gmap [user choice to use install.gmap OR install original locked]

    does not unlock allready installed maps -> Un-Install first using 'Control panel' [or manually delete & regedit]

    runs from [portable]drive, not from CD/DVD

    other tools may not allways work (names and path with blank spaces or '&', no need for registry install or .img-format)

    no 'secret' scripts [unlike other packers, just open exe with winrar / 7zip]

    may install multiple xxxx.gmap folders

    do not rename de original name of the xxxx.gmap folders

    easy to uninstall [little script added to open maps folder]

    ============

    tweak-TIPS:

    copy mapsource special anywhere you want and make a shortcut to the desktop

    run Maps-folder.cmd to open folder

    do not install same maps [=same FID] on two locations on one PC [install.gmap does not check registry]

    first fix mapsource problem with other installed / converted / unlocked maps

    MapSource language: same as OS-setting [use appropriate MapSourceXXX.dll from same version]

    one map? MapSource [view] -> [switch to product >]

    location original maps XP [admin]:
    %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\GARMIN\Maps
    => C:\documents and settings\all users\application data\GARMIN\Maps

    location original maps W7 [admin]:
    %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\GARMIN\Maps
    => C:\ProgramData\GARMIN\Maps

    location additional maps [Maps-folder current user]:
    %APPDATA%\GARMIN\Maps
    XP => C:\Documents and Settings\xxxxxx\Application Data\GARMIN\Maps
    W7 => C:\Users\xxxxxx\AppData\Roaming\GARMIN\Maps

    A Couple of questions if I may.... to me, your post is very vague.

    What is "install.gmap.exe" and why was it created ?

    What is it's relationship (if anything) to "UnLock Mapsource V1.7.exe"

    I've used "UnLock Mapsource V1.7.exe" and it works fine, so what would be the advantage (if any) to using "install.gmap.exe"

    There are so many of these little tools hanging around it's difficult to sort out when and why one is better than the other.

    Thank you.

    Re: install.gmap

    Hi qwik01,

    nice work!
    There is one option I would like to have implemented: not to copy the gmap folder itselve but only to copy/create a shortcut of the gmap folder to the right location. So you can avoid to have the data twice on your HD and keep your system partition smaller.

    best greatings

    Re: install.gmap

    If you like to manage your disk in a special way your free to do so.
    -To save space you may remove the original from your HDD.
    -If the system partition is to small you may mount an extra partition at any point.
    -If you want to keep the installed files on a separate disk you may use junction points rekenwonder.com/linkmagic.htm.
    -If that is not working for you, you have to reverse-convert the files and register them like the old files.
    Non of these options are in the scope of install.gmap.

    For people that may not realize this. The MapReverseConverter still works nicely with all of the latest maps (either locked or unlocked). I use it regularly to convert .gmap back to .IMG for the sole purpose of getting them off of "C:" and being able to move them to any disk I like.

    Also... to clarify, MapReverseConverter automatically adds the necessary registry entries for mapsource but you must physically remove the .gmap directory before mapsource will display the converted files (old style .IMG). It seems to have a priority for the .gmap style.
