Recommended DVD Writers for Navigation software
The most important thing while selecting a DVD Writer is the choice of the chipset used
Typically writers with a RENESAS chipset produce high quality copies of copyprotected cd's and DVD's

One of the best writers in the field is the LG GH22NS40 also for writing Blaupunkt TeleAtlas TravelPilot DX CD's
Since writing this item it has been brought to my attention that many users have encountered problems writing a proper functioning copy with this writer.
I suggest to no longer use this writer as a dedicated writer for navigation DVD's although some have made perfect copies with it

Speed setting
Every writer has a media table in memory
It is determined what the optimum speed is for writing the various media
It is a mistake to think that slower is better.
In fact a DVD written at 2.4 speed may be almost illegible and the same media written at 4 speed can be near perfection
So let the writer/program decide for you what the minimum or automatic speed is
Results of writing media can be checked with Opti Drive Control or DVDinfoPro
