    Kenwood DNXxxxx Maps

Here goes .... Just spent all my pocket money on the very latest Kenwood DNX9280BT . Great nav unit with Garmin nav and Navteq maps . In the system it tells me that the maps are 2011 so all is well except my home address and the next few roads do not exist ???? very odd as I have an igo unit with 2010 Navteq maps that have the missing roads on there . Anyone have any ideas what is going on ? Also is it possible to change the map with my old one ?

    hi
I am in uk . just wondered why the mapping on a brand new £1500 unit doesnt have all the roads on it ? my model is the latest Kenwood DNX9280BT and the maps supposedly installed are 2011 Europe . can I change the map on my unit? I have plugged in a micro usb lead in the back and get full access to the Garmin folder structure .

The updated maps are availble but the problem lies with Garmin and not the 1500 quid Kenwood, i've also noticed some roads missing here in NI even on the latest Garmin Maps.

Garmin and Kenwood are well known for date branding their maps in a very peculiar way
The maps presently available are branded 2012.10 and of course no one will readily believe that 2012 maps can exist in 2011.
However, the 2012 maps clearly are of a much earlier date and I would not be surprised if the real date of the database used lies another 2 years behind.

The advantage of doing so is that the exprnditure for the use of these data is only a fraction of the cost one would have to pay for really recent data.
Garmin seems to be buying stuff of which the ultimat date of consumption has long passed.

    Sadly you can't
You will have to live with a unit with a navigation part of which the quality is doubtfull in a number of ways:

The guidance and road selection algorithm is based on US conditions whhere road classification is completely diffrent from Europe
The unit has no input from either speedsignal, reverse of gyroscope, like every decent built in navi should have
The maps are generally regardes as inferior whereas the GUI is on TeleTubbie level

    Re: Kenwood DNXxxxx Maps

Dont get me wrong , I have had many sat navs and this one certainly ranks with the best of them and Im pretty pleased with it overall . I have speed signal input on mine and my new unit has gyroscope reverse as well so they may have learned their lesson . I like the gui as it it nice and bright and uncluttered which I like but I am extremely angry and disappointed about the maps . To be honest if they are re branding old maps with new dates and they are not as current as advertised then surely this is selling by misrepresentation and should perhaps be something trading standards should be aware of . I am a part time (retired) retail consultant and I am just getting more and more frustrated with company's in this country taking advantage by flaunting and manipulating the sale of goods act to suit themselves . I have sent quite a lengthy email to Kenwood and Garmin so lets see what they have to say on the matter . Is there no way to circumvent using Garmins maps and use Navteq maps direct ? Looking in the main directory there are 4 mapping files , gmapbmap , gmap3d , gmapprom , gmaptz and they are all .img files . Is it not just a case of replacing those files with more up to date ones , although as you say , they do state the dates as being the very latest .

    Re: Kenwood DNXxxxx Maps

Navteq does not make maps, they only collect data and sell this
They are also an outlet for many a manufacturer of maps but they themselves have nod sy in this since these customers just order a map in a certain format with use of a certain amount of data of a stipulated age.
This is where the money is being saved and the public lured into buying something that does not live up to the expectations the fancy date branding suggests.

    Anothe remark:

The kenwood dnx9280bt is certainly not fitted with speed input or gyroscope. The manufacturers specs are very clear about this
It operates only on GPS fixes and not on dead reckoning like any decent built in unit does!
It does have a reverse connection which is only intended to swith the unit to Reverse camera display if needed
