I have a TomTom One 3rd Edition, and one of the biggest complaints I have is the need to connect the unit to my computer once a week so that it can download satellite ephemeris/almanac data. This is the first and only car GPS I own, but I've used many others for hiking or aviation that don't require this.
My question is: are all car GPS units like this, or was it just a cost-saving measure by TomTom? I want to upgrade to a unit that doesn't require a weekly PC connection, but none of the specs mention that. My guess is that they all update themselves now, but I just wanted to check...
This is as far as I know a typical tomtom thing.
It speeds up positioning at startup.
But, you don't have to download this data, your tt will work just as well without it.
It will only take somewhat longer to find it's possition when you switch it on.
Once it got that, there is no difference.
