So, I got myself a TomTom Go 540 from a friend. He purchased it as an ex-display from ebay in December last year. However, he never managed to get the live services working. I phoned up tomtom to find out what the problem could be, and they said that it was registered in June 2010, so the live services have now expired. But, this doesn't go to explain why my friend never managed to get the Live Services before.
Anyway, playing about with the device this morning, I Noticed something weird...
I got in to the diagnostic screen, and according to that, the Hardware Type is a "TomTom GO 550 LIVE GPRS+EU". Now, I dunno why it's saying it's a go 550, when the underside shows explicitly a GO 540...
Also, the Bootloader version is "S5.5279 clist#575098 RVCT", if that makes any sense?! (As you can tell, I'm not very clued up with TomTom's yet! lol).
So, I just wanna know whether it's normal (I'd think not) that it says it's a GO 550, not a 540?! And whether the bootloader could be part of the culprit?
540 serial numbers on the bottom normally start with "WT....." and the label should also read "GO540 Live 4CF5.002.00
If you go to Main Menu page 3/status/version it should show App 9.058 & network Model should show bottom line "00.01.04"
My own 550 starts "W3...." and label says "GO550 4CP0.002.02" and network Model 00.01.06_EU
So it sounds like it's been played with
What can you see in Main menu/Live Services and in Preferences/MyTomTom account?
Sorry, not had chance to look in to this, as been really busy, and just not had sat nav whenever I've remembered... Many thanks for your reply tho
ANyway, my serial number does start off with W2, and the App number does show 0.058.568435.1. OS is set to 541764. So, all pointing to a Go540. Even going to that site link, and entering the serial number says it's a Go 540. However, when I click the network button in the version page, I get Model: 00.01.06_EU.
So, does this mean that a 550 network has been installed in the 540? . Could that be why I've never been able to get the Live services working?
The Live services (whichever Live model you have actually got) needs a subscription....sadly it ain't free)
I know it's not free, but there was a subscription that when I phoned tomtom up, was supposed to have been working until recently... My friend, in all the time he had it, had never managed to get it working. When I go to look at live, it just says unable to contact, or something along those lines. So, I am not going to go out and spend £60 odd to get the live services, when they aren't working! Surely, if the subscription has finished, it should come up with a message telling you that your subscription has finished?!
Also, why is it that everything keeps telling me it's a go 550? I plugged it in to my macbook the other day ... came up there saying it was a 550 ?!
the 510 and 710 series were the same unit but the 710 had a part european map so was classed as a uprated model, another way of getting you to spend more cash thinking the hardware was different when it wasnt.
