A friend of mine tried to update her TomTom and after the update it shows the flashing X. There is support for this on the TomTom site but the problem is she did not know to make a backup first.
When I connect the device via USB to the PC for TomTom Home 2 it doesnt detect it but instead Windows gives a warning to format this drive. This tells me that everything in the internal memory is corrupted and the only way to get pass this is to format. Now this is where the TomTom forums cant help me. This is the standard TomTom Start and not the Start 20 or 25 so I believe its not navcore 10. Can this GPS still be saved by formatting the drive and installing the map etc with the AutoActivate on this site? If this is possible so I have to install the navcore also and what is the standard version to install? I know how to install and use Autoactivate as I did this with info from here om my Windows Mobile phone.
Thanks in advance.
if you cannot recover internal memory with a standard recovery software, then you can format the drive in fat or fat32 mode.
After this you can use tomtom home (download it from tomtom site).
Tomtom home will reinstall all the original navcore (9.051 for tomtom start and 9.057 for tomtom start2) without map (do you have one legal?)
look if tt start now really.... starts!
After that you can try to install a patched navcore and use an updated downloaded map....
look at the guides on this forum
For a TomTom Start navcore 9.051 SE edition in x40light mode should be ok.
You can all bypass all this simply formatting and reinstalling the new navcore and map(s). no need to backup anything... only a simple fresh reinstallation (if internal memory is not hardware damaged)!!!

Thanks a lot. I will try this. I believe the memory is not hardware damaged because this happened after an update. My biggest concern was if I can go ahead and format. The device is only 2 months old but she can't find the proof of purchase anywhere so the only solution is to try and get it fixed.

if you cannot recover from a backup or with recovering software you have to format & reinstall.
TomTom home will reinstall the original navcore, but if there is no more map(s) on device you cannot neither use the "last guaranteed map" option in tomtom home.
This option downloads and installs the latest map on just buyed devices when you connect it the first time on a Pc/mac & you use tomtom home.
Otherwise you can allways buy and download the map(s) you need directly from tomtom home (look at the needed space, tomtom start has 1 or 2 Gb without external SD).
When I use recover software it will scan and detect 174 files but after the scan it doesnt show me anything to recover. Maybe the recover software is not that good. Now just to make sure. If I format then TomTom home will automatically install the navcore but I will have to buy the software again. I never payed for any software and the maps was pre-installed on the device. If that is the case then not even the maps from here will work?
Thank you for the help.
