I hope someone can help me get my Tom Tom up and running. My only GPS experience is with Mio, Igo8, Amigo, and Primo. Today I bought a cosmetically mint Tom Tom XL. After a little research I found out it is the XL (30 Series) TTS / 330S - 1GB.
The unit was dead but since then I have recharged the battery and performed a hard reset. I installed Tom Tom Home on my PC and the only update was GPS QuickFix. The unit starts and opens to the "Drive Safely" screen and when I select "continue" I get the "NO MAPS FOUND!" warning.
In the unit's files I found a folder named United States that I assume are the maps and is 319 MB in size. In this folder is a brand folder and 26 different files, 3 of which I think are the maps:
Are these even map files???
Should my GPS work with these files???
Can these be made to work or should I try updated maps???
How do I select the new correct maps???
I found video tutorials on how to download new maps that I "think" I could follow if I knew which files I need to work with my unit. I have searched the internet for several hours reading a lot of forums but still am not sure where to start. Any help will be appreciated.
I used Silverhawk's recommendation and started with a clean install. I had an interesting problem when I deleted all the files from my device as instructed in step #2. No files were showing on my PC but "used space" showed 321 MB. This did not leave enough space for any USA maps. I took a chance and formatted the unit and this gave me 979 MB. I am guessing there were files on the unit that my PC was not seeing. I followed the instruction and reloaded all updates through Tom Tom Home. I wasn't sure which maps to use but downloaded United States 875_3675. I guess I was lucky because after continuing the instructions I now have a working unit. After comparing the original backed up files with the working unit files I see that someone hacked a lot out of the unit for some reason. Since this is an "S" model with TTS I tried to get that to work but am having some strange problems. I will start a thread in the Voices section. Thanks again for the helpful information.
