First of all, if you are going to use a different navcore than the official 8.010 one, then you may as well download 9.170 SE as mentioned above. Because that way you can use the full featured 900.4602 maps. The 4602 maps require a v9 navcore. The old 8.562 SE navcore will not run these maps, but will run the basic 4600 maps. The 9.170 SE navcore link is in my previous post. You can get the 4602 maps from these map threads:
United_Kingdom_and_Republic_of_Ireland_900_4602 LINKS ONLY
Australia_900_4602 LINKS ONLY
Regarding map downloads, you shouldn't have to pay with credit card or anything. You would only be asked to if you are clicking on something like fast/instant/high speed download. Keep away from those buttons. Always look for the regular/free/slow download buttons which don't require registration or signing in. If a map download link is unavailable or has been deleted, try a different uploader.
So, you have a choice... either follow the clean install tutorial exclusively, without trying other navcores, and use the basic 4600 maps. Or install the 9.170 SE navcore with the full 4602 maps. If you can, try both methods and see what works better for you. Make sure you make complete backups of working setups using Windows Explorer (copy paste into a new folder).

As you are probably aware I am relatively new to this and seemingly stuck in a loop re: the map downloads.
Will try your suggestions.
Thanks again.

Hi Guys,
I have a pretty old TomTom One XL 240mb that I am looking to update. Downloaded TomTom Home today and updated the software. My software version is now 8.010 and my maps version is 675.1409. Please can you advise what steps I need to take to update to the latest UK and Ireland maps?
Many thanks in advance.
You can either follow the advice I gave above (using 9.170 SE navcore with a full featured map, eg. UK_and_RoI_900_4602), or just use the basic UK_and_RoI_900_4608 map with your current 8.010 navcore. Download the map from here:

Hi, I decided to install the 9.170 SE Navcore but when I downloaded the map and tried to put it on I was 40mb short of space. What type of SD card could I buy to allow this to run correctly? Alternatively I have also downloaded Navcore version 8.562 but I'm struggling to find any download links that are working for any UK and Ireland maps. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
A 2GB SD card will easily fit both maps. If you're going to use an even bigger card - known as an SDHC card (4GB or larger) then you must FIRST update your bootloader using the small card before updating the larger SDHC card. A suitable bootloader for ONE or ONE XL models is 5.5136. You can get it from here:
Bootloader 5.5136 for all ONE models only
The links in the post mentioned above for the UK map seem to work. Here is the link again (post #53) :

Lemonfish - thank you very much for your help on this. Got my 2gb SD card - have the 9.170 navcore loaded on and the 4602 UK map. Works excellently. Really appreciate it.
Just wondering where is the best place to download more voices (minor detail)? Only got Jane at the minute.
You're very welcome!
You can get free voices from TomTom Home. Or you can get a whole list of them from the TomTom Voices section, for eg. the following thread which contains a list of of all the voices:
