How to update TomTom maps on Foehn & Hirsch 4.3?

    Hi...
This is my first post on this site, having just found it..Woohoo!
I've just returned to the UK from abroad. I bought an F&H Sat Nav 4.3" from Ebuyer a few years ago and using the guides on the 'SimpleSatNav' site, I loaded TomTom 3rd Edition (with the excellent 'Black Menu' devised by one of SSN members).
I haven't modified any other Sat Nav since.
However, I see Simple Sat Nav has now been nobbled by we all know who.
The F&H was based (I think!) on the Navigon and I'm almost certain it could handle iGo software as well as TT.

The F&H unit still works superbly but I was wondering how I could get and install more recent TT maps/updates.

The procedure for doing this used to be on the SimpleSatNav website but I'm damned if I can remember how to do it.
As I said, I'm a little rusty on modifying.

Is there a 'dummies' guide to this on this site or can someone help me out?

    Many thanks

It's only possible if it runs on windows mobile.

If your unit is running TT7 then you should be able to upgrade to some versions of v885 maps.

The old navigo unit, which I think this unit of yours is similar to, could be upgraded by following the idiot's guide from the Simple satnav site. I may have it saved somewhere.

Hi mysatnav...thanks for taking time to reply.
If you could dig out the idiot's guide for me that would be much appreciated. I'm sure it's what I used in the first place...didn't keep a copy...didn't think SSN would ever die!

Hi, I have the same 4.3 as you have but am only able to run TT6 on it owing to lack of memory. Are you running TT7? If so how did you get around the
    lack of memory problem? Cheers.

Re: How to update TomTom maps on Foehn & Hirsch 4.3?

    Hi John....
Now that you mention it, I'm not sure which 'actual' description fits...TT6 or TT7...I suspect I probably have TT6 too.

When I load up TomTom, all I get is a small window saying: Tom Tom One: Third Edition, which then fades away, leaving me with the usual TT choices.

Since the unit hasn't skipped a beat from new and still works beautifully (main reason I want to keep it, rather than buy new) I never really bothered about which TT I had. Only the maps.

I run my current map from a 2Gb SD card, though if I recall, the unit doesn't have a large internal memory.

Either way, I don't remember anyone on SimpleSatNav warning of that or sayng only certain versions of TT would work on it.

    A couple of additional points:

    1) The F&H is one of the few SatNavs available (even now) that has a headphone socket.
If you're in a strange city and wish to use 'pedestrian mode', rather than holding the F&H to your ear over busy traffic (also signalling yourself as a 'tourist' and therefore potentially muggable! - also looks like mobile phone!) you can place the F&H in your pocket and connect to a pair of ear-phones. Much more pleasant, safe and inconspicuous to use that way. Especially if it's raining!

All the latest SatNavs I've seen offer pedestrian mode but seem to have totally glossed over how it is to be used in that way by not including a headphone socket!

    2) the voice sound from most SatNavs - including the F&H - is fine if you don't have any people talking in the car or are not listening to music.
However, if you are, then hearing the commands is virtually drowned out even with low-volume music, despite setting the volume via TT to 100%.

However, having that wonderful headphone socket allows you to team the F&H up with a small but powerful speaker (I use the excellent Veho - check Play.com, for just a few quid). That gets round the volume problem.

Of course, as you also know, you can also use the F&H as an MP3 player.
Team it up with a decent set of earphones and once again, you're laughing.

All in all, a great performer! I'm so glad I bought it when I did....

However, if updated maps require TT7, then looks like I'm stuffed. My F&H runs on Windows CE, probably like yours, but maybe not the 'latest'??

So how can I check which version of TT I have?

If I do have to buy a new SatNav, can't seem to find any 'newer' version of the F&H...with all the bells and whistles, including larger screen and, of course, headphone socket!
I'd certainly be happy to buy another one.

Wish I could've been more helpful on he 'memory' question, John, but like I said, ages ago now when I modified the F&H, so a bit rusty on the specifics.
    Regards
