i would say: forget that message, and close that warning window when it shows up. Then just do what you want to do with the device

Correct, as klazpt says. Just do a quick format and proceed with copying over navcore, maps, etc and patching everything

NO!!!!!!!!! The "format" message in windows 7 the OP was asking about is just a quirk of that OS. Ignore it and the device will be recognised within a few seconds and then can be worked on just as with earlier Windows versions.

A quick format is necessary when doing a clean install. The first post pretty much says that the user wants to "get it to work" and the best way to do that is to start from scratch with an empty drive, then installing the navcore, maps, etc.
I understand what you're saying, but "quirk" of Windows 7 or not, formatting is an essential step in this process.

Perhaps it was an essential step, but given that the OP didn't actually state the nature of the problem that can only be an assumption. However, I'm more concerned that others might believe that they need to do this just because a bug in Win-7 has it often asking whether the user wants to run format when a drive it doesn't immediately recognize is plugged in. Most of the time it isn't necessary.

Windows 7 asks this (mostly) if the user suddenly takes out the USB connection without using the 'Safely Remove' option. So my advise would be: use that option.

Doing a safe removal checks to make sure all open files are closed and any cached writes have been written to the device.

In windows, the NTFS file system writes to removable media at a vigorous rate, so by just pulling out the connection never normally loses anything.

However, TomTom's run on Linux which has a very lazy cache writing mechanism. So by just pulling out a connection, may corrupt your data.

So always disconnect your TomTom either by the disconnect button in TomTom Home or by the Windows Safely Remove Hardware feature
