iOS 1.15.1 Out, Bigger Map, Smaller App
The iOS 1.15.1 application has been released on iTunes to fix some minor issues with running under iOS 7.
However the most interesting part is that the application has been on a significant diet making it run faster and smoother on older devices.
Taking Europe as an example, the total app size is now 1.87GB (rounded up) when compared to 1.15's size of 1.99GB (again rounded up).
The map inside has not gotten any smaller and has actually increased by 30MB so we still have all the detail of the original v910 map and more.
The application itself overall is now 123MB lighter making a significant difference for the other smaller countries that were faced with a large download for a small map.
I remember reviewing the content of the application a couple of years ago only to learn the iOS version was more of a PNA emulator than a native app.
This size change could signify the end of emulation and the start of an actual true and native iOS application.
I suspected this would take place in the 2.0 release with the addition of the 3D rendering engine but it looks like we have an early glimpse of whats to come.
No 3D yet because the map bundled does not include it but an interesting project would be to combine the 3D v907 Europe map with this iOS application. We may then see 3D buildings for the first time in Tom Tom iOS.
The map bundled is Western_and_Central_Europe_2GB v915.5049
