  • Unlocking Map

In the past time, when we unlock map we need to creat gmapprom.unl which include 25 digits unlock code. But now, we just copy the unlocked map to the device then we can use it. Anyone can explain why we dont need to creat a new .uml file and just using the old .unl file can be done?
    Thanks!

    Very simple...

In the past, the maps you downloaded were NOT unlocked. It was the GPS or SD card specific key saved in the appropriate .UNL file that allowed the GPS to unlock the maps for use in your GPS.

The maps you are now downloading wich say "unlocked" means that their ability to be locked has been removed by some tool or process. To the GPS the maps appear "unlockable". There is no .UNL file required for an "unlocked" .IMG and if you've got a .UNL file hanging around your GPS you can delete it if you wish. It's doing nothing.

This is only 50% of the answer. The other 50% part is that map unlock code is also present in the gmapsupp - gmapprom.img file. If it was compiled in mapsource the .img file will contain the 25 digit unlock code and the separate .unl file is not needed. To change the 25 digit unlock code in gmapsupp.img (mapprom) file to your gps id you would use the jetmouse keygen and gmapsupp.img key editor v0.2

        Thanks 2 brothers above!
        To moose:
q1: Is there any advantage to change the 25 digits unlock code to my gps id?
q2: I found a thread in our forum:
        Code:
        http://gpsunderground.com/forum/showthread.php?672-Garmin-unlocker-alternative-New-v.5.2-update-04.05.2010
, Doesn't the unlocked map created by this tool need the .unl file either?

No advantage whatsoever. Don't make additional work for yourself. If you download and use already "unlocked" IMG files the unlock codes are meaningles even if they are in the IMG ot UNL file.

Just copy the IMG to your GPS ir SD card and enjoy.

the only advantage of changing the 25 digit code in MY .img file with gmapsupp.img key editor is when I want to give my legal copy of the file to any of my friends to load in to their gps.

As the Tiger said, if you are using non lockable maps (already fixed) there is no need to do anything else but load into sd card or gps.

The alternative method you are referring to is new method that suppose to work with new Garmin locking technology that is imbedded into the newest firmware for gps receivers. For now I have no use for it. I will keep the current firmware of my gps units.

used to be available on this site before it crashed. Now I don’t know. If there is a way of upload to this site I would post it , but I don’t know how. If you Google the name you might find it. Be careful of sites you download from, most with this type of info. are red flagged by site advisor.

I did the google searcg before I ask the question, but all the sites that came up were rather suspect torrent sites.

I stay away form them as you never know what you'll get.

Thanks for the response... let me know if you run across it anywhere.

                      Please upload to:

                      MegaUpload and/or MediaFire

and post back the corresponding URL(s).

Both upload sites are free and do not require a registered account in order to upload files.

Thanks for the upload, interesting tool on cursory examination. This tool may not be effective with the new security protection that's being rolled out currently though.

Probably not. This tool was around for a while now. It is very handy for editing 25 digit code inside the .img files for adopting them to any gps.
