    Hey guys,

I'm new here and a little baffled. I just bought a Garmin nuvi 550 GPS and I was suprised there wasn't any computer software included for me to install. I am looking for software that will allow me to make a custom route on my PC (just like I would on the GPS) and then upload it to my GPS unit. I am planning a very long trip for the summer, and it would take forever to input it on the GPS itself...

    Thanks,

    Thanks,
According to the Nuvi 550 specs

you can save up to 10 routes. Typically, you can create and save them at the GPS through a screen interface OR you use Garmins "Mapsource" program on a PC to manage waypoints and routes and transfer them to your GPS.

To do that, you need the program "mapsource" and the mapsource version of the maps you are interested in using. Onece you have maps installed in mapsource you can do what you are trying to do. With mapsource you can also build custom maps (called mapsets) and use mapsource to transfer them to your GPS.

You can typically download mapsource and the maps via links on this forum.

          lol guys,

All this trouble and the solution was SOOO easy...I just got a response from Garmin. Here it is:

          Dear Mr. so and so,

Thank you for contacting Garmin International.

For your unit you can go to mapquest.com and create a route here and send it over to your Nuvi.

          With Best Regards,

Re: What program do I use to make routes on my PC and upload them to my GPS?

            Alright guys,

I'm lost beyond belief here. I tried mapquest and while the upload worked, the route on my GPS wasn't exactly the same as the route that I made on map quest. Anyone have a clue as to why?

Can anyone please tell me what program I can use or download off of here to create routes on my PC and upload them to my GPS? I have the nuvi 550 and no SD card. I don't want anything fancy, I just want to make a route and upload it to the GPS exactly as I configure it on the PC...

            Please and thanks...

The reason for the discrepancy is very common and simply because mapquest and your GPS use different routing engines/algorithms. When you create at route (by any means you like, lets say mapquest) the only things that are saved in the route data sent to your GPS are the start point, end point, and any intermediate via points YOU EXPLICITELY SAVE. Those basic points will always be honored and you can add more intermediate vias to force the shape of the route you want.

Once the GPS receives those few basic route points it always re-calculates it's its own best route, based on it's own routing rules, and the via points it has been asked to honor.

The only "real" way to guarantee that the route is what you want is create it at the GPS and save it. The second best way as I said earlier is to create them in Garmin Mapsaource and transfer them to your GPS. If you use mapsource to create your routes they will ALMOST always match what you get on the GPS because they are both using the Garmin routing rules.

Thanks for the answer, now I understand.

I still have no clue how to get mapsource from this site. I don't need any of the maps, I just want the software...

The software is no good without maps. You need mapsource versions of the maps. Look here for starters.

What's Garmin's idea about this? Do they seriously mean that you should not get Mapsource with your Nuvi and that you should use Mapquest instead? Sound completely insane to me.

                      nüvi 550T

When I am flying with an airline, I just hope to record the flight trace with my 550T. The position is all right, however the altitude information from 550T is wrong. For example, when the pilot told me the right altitude is 11000m, the 500T shows 2000m. How I can get the right data?

i don't think you can; plane electronics will interfere - and also it's not that safe imo.

Oregon 550T has a barometric altimeter and you get the altitude corresponding to the plane inside pressure.
A 550T ownwer could tell you if can also display the altitude measured pby GPS?

can a waterways map update like us039r be downloaded and usable on a nuvi 550?

Or similar device. I typically use my Nuvi for street use. It shows waterways but not depths and launches, fuel stations etc. They sell the maps, supposedly compatible with my gps. If it can be done - do you know the download procedure?? - please help.

Yes it can be done. You need the map then put on micro sd card.
