  • "Gmapsupp.img" to Mapsource

    Dear friends,

I'm very happy with this website. First of all I want to welcome you and wish you all the best, and then give thanks for all the information deposited here. Many thanks.
I need information that I have not been able to find and sure some of you can give me a hand.
I have a Garmin GPSMAP 76 The simplest model, I downloaded some files "BlueChart" to decompress it to me on a particular file gmapsupp.img. The MapSource and I opened it to put GPS chips, but I do not know how to do it. Can you help me?

Many thanks from Cadaques (Catalunya) EU.

            Re: "Gmapsupp.img" to Mapsource

I rarely do that but this sequence (from the old forum) has worked for me.

in step 7 you nee to supply your own mapset name
in step 9 you need the FID for the maps you are trying to install

            Converting an img to mapsource
            1. Run the GMapTool.exe
            2. Hit "Add Files" and add the "gmapprom.img" file
2.5. Under the "options" tab tell it the location of cgpsmapper.exe
            3. Click on "Split" at the top.
            4. Select the directory where you want to save it
            5. Make sure that "Create" is set to "files for mapsource"
            6. Make sure there is a tick in "compile map preview"
            7. Mapset name is "CN AUS & NZ NT 2010.10"
            8. Tick "set mapset FID"
            9. FID is 2006 and PID is 1
            10. Click on "split all".
            11. Wait until it is done, should take a couple of minutes.
            12. Close GmapTool.exe
            13. Open the directory from step 4.
            14. Locate install.bat and run it.
            15. That should be all you need to do to install maps into mapsource.

Plese some to tell me more about (2.5 tell it the location of cgpsmapper.exe) - I don"t undertnd.

              gmapsupp.img import in Mapsource

              Hi all,

Although it's a known topic, I cannot find a clear guide how I can open the file in Mapsource.

I have been able to copy the file to my Garmin Edge 705 without any issues. I just had to copy it and it worked.

However, I would like to prepare bicycle tours on my pc and transfer it to the GPS. Therefore, the map has to be visible in Mapsource, and even after two days of looking on different forums, I still don't know how I can import this gmapsupp.img into Mapsource.

              Thanks

              Kira

                  Re: gmapsupp.img import in Mapsource

Hi, thx for the info. But now I see my Garmin Edge 705 appearing in the left window of basecamp. However, I can still not see my map CN Europe NT 2010.20 in my micro SD card on the device although it works fine directly on the Garmin device. (I can plan a route on the device) Any idea why I cannot see the map in basecamp?

                  thx

                  Kira

                    Re: gmapsupp.img import in Mapsource

Normally Basecamp is also showing the map, when reading from the device.
But I doubt you can plan with this your routes
My suggestion, download the Mapsource version of CN Europe 2010.20 and install it on ur PC.
Btw. 2011.10 is currently the latest one

                          Viewing .img files in Mapsource

Can anyone tell me how to view or place .img files into Mapsource. I have downloaded the special Edition Mapsource application (6.15.5) but still cannot see the image files I have put in c:\garmin.

                          Thanks

Re: Viewing .img files in Mapsource

Garmin gmap****.img files may bee used with Garmin BaseCamp. If it's marine charts they can be seen in Garmin HomePort. This works for most pre-built gmapsupp.img files that's having the MS flag set to 0.
One may also use Garmin Mobile PC to view a IMG map on a PC.

If it's for some specific reason you want to use MapSource you can make a MapSource install kit of a gmapsupp.img file. The reverse engineering process can be done by using GMapTool and cGPSmapper or MapToolKit. The drawback is that you loose the search index in MapSource and the map is more or less worthless to transfer to a GPS from that MapSource build.
Another way is to install Garmin Trip & Waypoint manager and substitute the "C:\Garmin\TRIPWPT5\TRIPWPT5.img" file. Make a backup of the original TRIPWPT5.img file and rename your gmapsupp.img file to TRIPWPT5.img in the correct path. This is also just for PC browsing.

MapSource should by default be used with genuine MapSource maps with full installation kit for MapSource.
