  • Why bother to get new maps.....?

    Dear GPS-U,

I am always surprised how many people do so much effort in obtaining new TT maps en meta's as i found out that every new map release comes with
    disappointments...let me explain.
New maps, i assume, should be really up to date and more sophisticated than the previous ones but the contrary is true. Take for instance the Benelux maps...Every day since i got a TT with Benelux version 830, i drive the same route to my work...As this 830 is quite good, newer releases like 835, 840, 845 and now 850 are gradually showing less information. Near flyovers at Rotterdam, Holland (Kleinpolderplein, Ridderkerk, Terbregseplein) vital lane guiding information has disappeared since version 830. Another example is the Shell gasstation along the A4 near Zoeterwoude...Has been demolished since 3 years but it still appears on the new BNL 850.2781...Another one, a railroad is showing near Papendrecht but in reality been gone since many years...Not only BNL, also France...Take for instance the famous V2 wartime site near Wizernes...Since many years the location of a museum with nice entrance roads and carparks...TT map France 850.2781, however, still says it is near an unpaved road...So what is the use of new releases as in fact nothing changes or even get more worse?...The only reason i can imagine is that it generates a substantial amount of money for TT....Anyone with the same experiences?

    Thanks, Jona

    Well said !!

And i've echo'd you're exact sentiments many times over the years.

As you pointed out, NEW DOES NOT MEAN BETTER

The new map releases do nothing more than create frenzy amongst the forums, but most
importantly, take hard-earned money from your pockets and into those at TomTom
    It's really all that simple.

But you should say it to Tomtom (through MapShare), or TeleAtlas (through MapInsight), not to us !

Mappa Italia 8.50, nessuna differenza ancora trovata con la precedente 8.45. Sembra proprio che sia il caso per fare CASSA.

Which means by google Map Italy 8.50, still found no difference with the previous 8.45. It seems that is the case for cash.

Why bother to get new maps.....?

I really don't know about other maps but the Europe and Greece map that I'm using have significant updates since 845 and has since 825. The Greece map alone has grown from a 84% coverage to a 95% coverage from 845 to 850. It is still far from perfectbut people in Greece do not tend to bother with mapshare. Mapshare is a great tool since no map company is going to invest millions of Euro to travel the billions of miles of road. Don't get me wrong I don't work for TomTom or TeleAtlas or another map company. But I have personal expirience with map making and it's not at all easy and there will never be a perfect map.
What I know is that corrections that I send through Mapshare were incorporated in 850 realese.

          Cheers.

              @Jona1

If you still want to receive MapShare updates, your map shouldn't be older than one year !

Perhaps, but for maps older than one year the FAQ on says (in theory) no.

The FAQ's...... in this case , are wrong.

If you have a reliable source of "current" mapshare files, then
you never need to get them online. Good since mapshare
was offered as a map feature

All you need to do to use them, is just copy

                    -MapServerPatch.dat
                    -PatchFilter.dat
                    -ServerLineIndex.dat
                    -ServerNameIndex.dat

to the map directory that has all the other .dat files

Re: Why bother to get new maps.....?

                      Jona,
I compared 8.30 vs. 8.45/8.50 maps. They are really updated on important topics! Two examples are Grijsoord (Intersection A15/A50) which was redesigned to improve flow from A15E to A50N. The other is "Ekkersrijt" which was completely redesigned. Follow Tomtom 8.30 and you'll end up completely wrong! Also POI's are updated... some roads that are now one-way only were also updated and a new neighboorhood nearby was added... And those are only a few points I happen to know! The A2 is seeng dramatic changes, many improvements on many roads these days...
So, I think it makes a lot of sense to update maps, although we must never forget to use common sense when using a navigator!
                      Cheers!
