  • TTS Vocalizer voices (also Dutch, Italian and German)

TomTom on the iPhone uses Vocalizer voices (in many languages). I modified these voices to make them work on a PND. This way, besides US English, Spanish and French speaking people, also Dutch, German and Italian speaking people are able to use TTS on their 32MB RAM devices. (The US English, Spanish and French Vocalizer voices are already available for a long time.)

UPDATE 4/11/2013: I have removed all files as they were taken offline for legal reasons. I'm not re-uploading any files, and only instructions will remain listed in this post. Sorry.

[!] Please install only one computer voice at a time, otherwise some voices will possibly remain silent.

[!] There are several people having problems with strange pronunciation of streetnames (or some strange words just before the streetname). This is a known problem and, so far, there is one solution: Use any NC8 or NC 9.024. Two other - possible - solutions are: 1. Deselect the 'Read aloud foreign street names' option in the 'Voice preferences' menu and 2. Go in the menu and tick 'Change Map' and then reselect the same map. I hope this may help people who have this problem.

    Instructions:

    1. Download the .rar file.
    2. In the .rar file there is a folder, rename that folder to VocalizerTTS
    3. Put that VocalizerTTS folder in the root of your TT, or in the root of your SD-card.
4a. If you have a TT with the official NavCore installed and your TT officially supports TTS, go to step 5.
4b. If you have a TT with the official NavCore installed and your TT does not officially support TTS, you need to install one of the SE NavCores. After that, go to step 4c.
4c. If you have an SE NavCore, make sure there is no 'ttsoff' line in the setconfig.txt file.
    5. Select the TTS voice in the voice settings on your TT.

:!: For Dutch users, see post #48 for a fix. :!:

Please let me know when some voice is not working or if you have other questions.

I'm rather taken with the Serena voice, but there's a niggling little problem that's bugging me a bit. Every time she reads out a road name, she keeps saying "language en" beforehand. It doesn't happen with road numbers, just names. Is there some setting that I've missed that can stop this? I'm running the most recent SE core with the 2667 UK map on a Go510.

I have not tested it since I do not have one, but I'm quite sure that the PDA does not support TTS.

I'm seeing more and more people who have this problem. It seems that this is the case with the latest SE NavCores (v9's) only. I really don't know why this happens, but you could try one of the NC8 versions.

              Hi Megalos,

              thanks a lot!
It is really a pity that the PDA does not support TTS.
Hopefully we can get this solved with TT8

Looks like it's not the navcore at fault, but the map I was using. Having just upgraded to the new 850 maps, the "language en" bug has disappeared .

Re: TTS Vocalizer voices (also Dutch, Italian and German)

                    @Megalos

Background: I have older TT One XL with 8.010 Navcore. Tried to update to 9.026. D/L Basicpack and SE. Extracted both to 4GB SD card plus your Samantha Vocalizer TTS and maps NA 845.2645 to created folder North_America_845_2645. All went well except that my Bootloader 5.3026 cannot read SD cards. Backed up everything from TT device and after deleting from TT device, I tried to copy SD card to the device itself but there wasn't enough space so I put the backup back to the device. Works fine except that I'm back to where I started.

Questions: Is there a way to put TTS on 8.010? I can't find any entries "ttsoff" to delete. I know it's not recommended but is there any way to update my bootloader to a version that can read SD cards?

Bootloader: Easy. Download bootloader 5.5022 or 5.5128 (recommended) and place it on either the internal memory of the one XL or on a small (<2GB) SD card. Reboot your Tomtom and let it update its bootloader automatically.
You can download it from many sources, but I would advise to download it from Tomtom directly. Since they do not offer bootloaders separatately, download the cab for navcore 8.412 which contains bootloader 5.5128:

                      Code:
                      http://download.tomtom.com/sweet/navcore/8.412.xl2009_live_2048.CAB-navcore-XL_LIVE.cab
Open this cab and copy the file SYSTEM (Not TTSYSTEM) to your tomtom. This is the file which will write the new bootloader into the EPROM once restarted. Ensure that the battery of your Tomtom is fully charged before doing this.

Other issue, TTS on 8.010: There are probably ways that tomtom has prevented this, but nothing stops you from using SE Navcore 8.417 or SE 8.562 which are patched in all ways. They will even be snappier than 9.026 since your Tomtom has only 32 MB and 266 MHz of CPU.

One more thing: a 4GB SD card is not really standard and it might be possible that it does not work even after the bootloader upgrade. 4 GB and bigger cards should always be SDHC spec. Simple SD cards officially go up to 2 GB.
Get a Class4 or Class6 card for proper performance.

heijx is right. On the 8.010, you were unable to find the ttsoff switch. This is because your 8.010 is an official one, not a SE one. The switches are applicable only to SE versions. Besides 8.417 and 8.562, you could also try 8.544, but all three should work fine.
